Wedding music: why it doesn't pay to cut corners

Planning a wedding involves so many choices that it takes very little to get lost and lose track of everything. Music is one of the choices with the most options, but if we think about it, a wedding is a big celebration with the people you care about most. Naturally, you want every guest to have an exciting and fun day. With that in mind, music and entertainment are essential.

If you wanted Negramaro at your wedding, nobody would stop you, provided they were willing to take the booking. But at what cost?

Here's how not to cut corners on the music:

My cousin

Yes, him: he went to the conservatoire and he's brilliant. Taking nothing away from his talent, playing at a wedding also means knowing how to entertain guests, organise a bit of fun and professionally accommodate the couple's requests. The show must go on, exactly: a band that doesn't specialise in weddings could leave you without music, listening to Aunt Carmela chattering at the next table. Choosing a young band is fine, just make sure they know what playing at a wedding involves.

There's a band I love… but

You've heard an amazing band you know would drive everyone wild at your wedding, but you can't afford the full line-up because their fee is too high. Unfortunately, cutting band members strips away the very essence of the group, and that would be a real shame. You could try asking the frontman whether he has a solo project similar to what you heard. Always remember to make clear that it's for a wedding.

Don't forget about distance

Booking a band based far from your venue means travel and overnight accommodation: you can't expect a band to drive home more than an hour after a full day of playing. Bear in mind that the music is the last to stop working, so the musicians will be among the last to finish the day.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't it pay to cut corners on wedding music?

Because music makes the party: poor entertainment is noticed straight away and weighs on every guest's memory of the day.

Band or DJ for your wedding?

It depends on the style of the party: a band creates a live atmosphere, a DJ offers more variety. Listen to them before choosing and check their wedding experience.

Can I ask a musician friend to play at my wedding?

You can, but think it over carefully: a professional knows the timings, equipment and surprises of a wedding, and your friend gets to enjoy the party.
