What if it rains on your wedding day? Tips for stunning photos

Rain is undoubtedly one of the main worries when planning a wedding. From a photographic point of view, though, bad weather isn't an obstacle but an opportunity to create unique, striking images.

In many years of weddings between Irpinia and the Amalfi Coast I've photographed days of full sun and days of pouring rain. I'll be honest: some of the photos I'm fondest of were taken under a grey sky. Here's what really happens to photos when it rains, and how to face a rainy wedding without anxiety.

What happens to the photos if it rains on your wedding day?

The photos aren't ruined: the atmosphere changes. Rain brings softer light, deeper colours and spontaneous moments that never happen in the sun, like running under an umbrella or a hug beneath a portico. My job is to read the weather of the day and adapt the coverage: we shoot outdoors during the breaks, use the venue's covered spaces and look for reflections when the sky closes in. In my style, wedding reportage, rain becomes part of the story, not a problem to hide.

The light of an overcast sky

Clouds act like a huge natural diffuser: they remove harsh shadows and give a soft, even light, perfect for faces and the colours of the outfits. No squinting in the sun, no hard shadows on the face, no blown-out whites on the bride's dress: under an overcast sky skin looks more even and the details of the dress stand out better.

Creative details for the shoot

  • Clear umbrellas: a simple, elegant accessory that lets you shoot outdoors while staying dry and creates an intimate atmosphere.
  • Reflections and evening lights: raindrops and wet tarmac create wonderful reflections of light, especially as evening falls and the venue lights come on.
  • Windows and glass walls: the light coming through a window on a rainy day is among the most beautiful for couple portraits and the bride getting ready.
  • Boots and capes: if you like the idea, a pair of colourful boots or capes for the guests become a fun detail to capture.

"Sposa bagnata, sposa fortunata" (a wet bride is a lucky bride): is it true?

The saying is old and comes from farming culture: rain was a sign of abundance and fertility for the fields, and so also a good omen for the new family. There's no proof it brings luck, but one thing is certain: couples who accept the weather with a smile enjoy the day much more, and it shows in the photos.

How to check the weather history for your date

Reliable forecasts only arrive a few days before, but when you choose the date you can already get an idea by looking at the weather in past years. It won't tell you what the weather will be like; it tells you how often it rains at that time of year in the venue's town. I always recommend it to couples deciding between two dates.

  1. Open the 3bmeteo weather history: the page starts from Avellino.
  2. Search for the venue's town using the site's search bar, or type the name into the page address: 3bmeteo.com/meteo/nome-del-comune/storico (for example Grottaminarda, ariano+irpino, mirabella+eclano).
  3. Choose the month and year: you'll see rain, temperatures and wind day by day.
  4. Repeat for three or four years in a row for the same period: it's the comparison that counts, not a single year.

Data source: 3bmeteo, historical archive by town.

The importance of a plan B

Choosing a venue with large indoor spaces, porticoes or bright greenhouses lets you enjoy the day knowing that, even in pouring rain, the photos will be polished and charming. Here you'll find more tips on choosing where to get married.

When we visit the venue or talk before the wedding, we look together at its covered spots: a portico, a room with large windows, a winter garden. That way, if the sky changes its mind, we already know where to go and the day carries on carefree. We always decide the timing together, depending on how the day goes.
