How much does a wedding photographer cost?

“How much does a wedding photographer cost?” It is the question I am asked most often, usually in the very first message. It is a fair question: the photographer is one of the big items in the budget. But the honest answer is that the price alone says very little. What matters is what is included: how many hours, how many people, what kind of album, how much work after the wedding. In this article I explain how I see it and how I work.

Why choose a professional photographer

When you plan a wedding a whole world opens up: venue, restaurant, dress, flowers, music. Of all the suppliers, the photographer is the one who spends the whole day with you, from the preparations to the last dance. And it is the only one who leaves you something that lasts: the photographs, which you will look at again in twenty years and your children will leaf through.

That is why I advise you not to rely on the relative who loves photography or on the offer that looks too good to be true. A wedding cannot be repeated: it takes experience to handle the light of a dark church, tight timings, the emotion of a moment that lasts a few seconds. And be wary of very low quotes that then grow along the way, with prints, albums and “extras” nobody had explained to you.

What is behind a photographer’s price

People often think: “He is asking that much for one day of work?”. In reality the wedding day is only part of the job. Before it there are meetings with you, site visits and preparing the equipment. After it comes the work nobody sees:

  • the selection of thousands of shots, to tell the story of the day without repetition;
  • the editing of every photo, one by one, to give the whole set a consistent style;
  • keeping the files safe, with backup copies stored in different places;
  • the album layout, which takes time, taste and several rounds of revisions with you.

The service also includes a pre-wedding connection session: an informal meeting before the wedding to get to know each other and help you feel at ease in front of the camera. Then, on the wedding day, we already know each other and work better together.

What the price depends on

Every wedding is different, which is why I do not work with the same price list for everyone. The quote changes mainly according to:

  • the hours of coverage: from the preparations to the party, or just some moments;
  • a second photographer: at some weddings one person is not enough, for example when the bride and groom get ready in two houses far apart;
  • the album: it is the item that weighs most on the total;
  • video and drone footage, if you want them;
  • the distance to the venue and travel during the day.

The album: the item that makes the difference

A handmade album with quality materials can change the final cost of the service a lot. But it is also what you will keep in your hands forever. My advice is to look at how it is printed: choose photographic printing on chemical paper, which lasts over time and gives faithful colors, over typographic (offset) printing, which is cheaper but less durable. If you want to know more, I have written a guide on the mistakes to avoid when choosing your album.

On a tight budget?

Don’t give up on a professional: ask instead for a service with digital photos only, without the album. You can print the album later, calmly, when your budget allows. It is a solution I often suggest, and it still gives you a story told properly.

I only ask one thing: let’s talk about it openly. Tell me how much you can spend and what really matters to you; together we will find the right solution, without giving up on quality.

How to choose without surprises

When you compare quotes, don’t just look at the final price. Always ask:

  • how many hours of coverage are included;
  • how many photos you will receive and how soon;
  • whether the album is included, what kind it is and how it is printed;
  • whether there are extra costs, for example for travel.

Above all, look at complete weddings, not just the best photos on social media: a whole wedding told from start to finish tells you much more. You can find mine among my real weddings.

Frequently asked questions

What does a wedding photographer’s price depend on?

The hours of coverage, a second photographer, the album you choose, any video or drone footage and the distance to the venue. That is why I always prepare a tailored quote rather than the same price list for everyone.

Is the photo shoot quote free?

Yes. Send me the date, the venue and what you would like: I will prepare a detailed quote, free and with no obligation.

Is it worth saving on the wedding photographer?

Photos are one of the few things from your wedding that last forever. Rather than the final price, it is worth comparing what is included: hours, editing, album and delivery times.

Can I book digital photos only and do the album later?

Yes: it is a solution I often suggest to couples on a tight budget. You get all the wedding photos straight away and can print the album later, calmly.
